Our Journal "The Postage Stamp"

The publication of a philatelic journal by the Philatelic Society of Athens (PSA) was the idea of George Papastefanou who was president from 1937 until 1942. His efforts were eventually rewarded by the publication of the first copy of "The Postage Stamp" in 1942. Managing director was Vice-President Andreas Psaras and later, Konstantinos Zoumboulidis. Editors were Zoumboulidis, followed by Christos Kalfarentzos, Demosthenes Petrides, and Sofoklis Pantaleon.

"The Postage Stamp" was well received by Greek philatelists. Submissions not just by PSA members but by any serious philatelist were welcome. Some of the then better-known Greek philatelic scholars such as Andreas Psaras, Konstantinos. Zoumboulidis, G. Mahairitsas, N. Alfieris and Kostas Stefanoudakis were contributors.

The journal came to life during a particularly difficult period for Greece. The Second World War, the German occupation and the subsequent Greek Civil War all happened at that time - something which brought much economic hardship to the population. Indeed, the first issues of "The Postage Stamp" were only made possible because of financial support by Papastefanou.

Alas, in June of 1948, "The Postage Stamp" was forced to cease publication. But still, the idea persisted among PSA members - so much so that in 1982, when PSA Secretary-General Konstantinos Sfikas pushed the board to consider bringing it back, they gave their consent. And so, 34 years later, "The Postage Stamp" was published once more. During this second iteration, Konstantinos Sfikas was editor; assisted initially by George Pahis and later by Dimitrios Skintzis.

Unfortunately, after 26 issues, economic factors again become a problem, and so for a second time, in December of 1987, the PSA had to cease publication of "The Postage Stamp".

But the journal was not forgotten. Twenty-five years later, in 2012, it came back to life for a third time. At the start, Anastasios Koukoulios was responsible for publication and editing. However, from the third issue onwards, Konstantinos Sfikas took over - with help from Nikos Andriotis, who has managed the graphics and printing from the very beginning.

During this third and current period, more than 55 philatelists have published articles over 30 issues, and feedback has been encouraging. In addition to philatelic topics, the journal also features articles of interest for the non-philatelic public. It is free of charge for all PSA members as well as for other Hellenic philatelic associations.

On April 5th, 2016, following a proposal by Society President Konstantinos Sfikas, the board unanimously decided to establish an award in memory of its founder and first president, George Papastefanou. This is bestowed every two years and is given for the most outstanding article contributed to "The Postage Stamp".

Awards

The 1st “George Papastefanou" award was given in 2016 to PSA President Konstantinos Sfikas for his article "The Railways of Northwestern Greece", published in issue 5 of "The Postage Stamp".

The 2nd such award was presented in 2018 to Dimitris Varelas for his article "Special Post Offices of the Attica Region".

No award was presented in 2020, because of problems having to do with the COVID-19 pandemic.

As of this writing, we look forward to the end of 2022 for the presentation of the 3rd “George Papastefanou" award.
